Redlands has some of the oldest and best kept houses in the Inland Empire. Victorians, Craftsman bungalows and Spanish Revival homes from the citrus years line the streets south of downtown, and many still have original wood siding, shingles, turned porch posts and wood windows. That kind of house takes more prep than paint: scraping, sanding, priming bare wood and caulking joints. Any home built before 1978 may also have lead in the old layers, so the prep has to be done with care. Newer tracts on the north and east sides are mostly stucco. Redlands summers are hot and dry, and the sun breaks down paint on south and west walls well before the shaded sides. Winter brings most of the rain, and wood trim that has lost its paint film soaks it up.
