Sun is what wears out exterior paint in San Bernardino. South and west walls fade and turn chalky, and wood fascia and eaves dry out and peel long before the stucco does. We wash the house, fill stucco cracks, prime bare wood and use exterior paint made to hold its color.
An exterior repaint in San Bernardino is mostly a stucco job with wood around the edges. The stucco itself lasts. What gives out is the paint film, which the sun turns to a chalky powder you can wipe off with your hand, and the wood at the roof line. Fascia boards, eaves, rafter tails and patio covers dry out, split and peel years before the walls look tired. Older bungalows near downtown add wood siding, which needs more scraping and priming.
We start by washing the whole house to take off dust and chalk, then let it dry. Hairline stucco cracks are filled with a flexible patching material, and wider ones are opened and patched so the repair holds. Loose paint on wood is scraped and sanded, bare wood is primed, and open joints are caulked. Windows, light fixtures, concrete and plants are masked or covered. On stucco the paint is usually sprayed and then rolled in, which works it into the texture.
Timing follows the weather here. In July and August, average highs are in the upper 90s and walls in direct sun get far hotter, so we start early and move around the house with the shade. Paint put on a scorching wall dries before it can bond. We do not spray when the Santa Ana winds blow down the Cajon Pass. If your home is in an HOA, get the colors approved first. Exterior painting in San Bernardino: common questions
My stucco leaves white powder on my hand. Can it still be painted?

Yes. That powder is old paint that the sun has broken down, called chalking. It has to be washed off first. If some chalk remains after washing, a primer made to bind chalky surfaces goes on before the finish coats.
Do you paint in summer in San Bernardino?
Yes, with an adjusted day. We begin early, paint the walls that are in shade and stop or switch sides when a wall gets too hot. Check the paint label for its temperature limits. Surface temperature matters more than air temperature.
Can you paint only the wood trim and leave the stucco?
Yes. When the wall color is still even but the fascia and eaves are peeling, a trim-only job is a sensible choice. We scrape, prime and paint the wood and tell you honestly what shape the stucco paint is in.
