Paint Sheen, Paint Types and Colors: A Plain Guide

Which sheen for walls and trim, the best paint for baths, halls and sunny exteriors, how many coats, how much paint and how to pick colors in San Bernardino.

Paint Sheen, Paint Types and Colors: A Plain Guide

Paint choices come down to three things: how shiny, what kind and what color. This page answers the common questions for San Bernardino homes, where strong sun is the main thing an exterior paint has to survive.

Price ranges on this page are national figures published by HomeGuide for 2026. They are not our quotes. Local labor, paint prices and the condition of your own walls move the number up or down. Last checked October 2026.

What sheen should I use for walls and trim?

Use a low sheen on walls and a higher sheen on trim. For most rooms that means flat, matte or eggshell on walls, flat on ceilings and satin or semi-gloss on doors, baseboards and window trim. Shinier paint is easier to wash but shows every dent and patch. Flatter paint hides flaws but marks more easily.

Eggshell or satin for living room walls, and flat or eggshell to hide bad walls?

Eggshell suits most living room walls. It has a soft glow and wipes clean. Satin is a step shinier and better for homes with small children or pets, but it shows roller marks and wall flaws more.

To hide bad walls, choose flat or matte. Light bounces off a flat surface evenly, so patches, waves and old repairs fade into the wall. Good quality flat paints now wash better than they used to.

Should trim be satin or semi-gloss?

Either works. Semi-gloss is the traditional choice for trim. It is the easiest to wipe and stands out against the wall. Satin gives a softer look and hides brush marks and dents in older trim better. On old doors and baseboards with many layers of paint, satin is often the kinder choice.

What is the best paint for a bathroom or kitchen?

For a bathroom or kitchen, the best paint is a washable acrylic in satin or semi-gloss, or a paint made for baths that resists mildew and moisture. Prep matters more than the label. Soap film and cooking grease must be cleaned off first. A working exhaust fan does more for bathroom paint than any product.

What is the best paint for a high-traffic hallway?

For a hallway that gets heavy use, choose a scrubbable paint in eggshell or satin. Hallways, stairs and kids' rooms get touched, bumped and wiped all the time. Look for a product rated for scrubbing. Keep some leftover paint, clearly labeled, for touch-ups.

What is the best paint for exterior walls in this climate?

The best paint for exterior walls in San Bernardino is a 100 percent acrylic exterior paint with strong resistance to fading and chalking. Sun is the enemy here, far more than rain. On stucco, a flat or low-sheen acrylic hides patches and lets the wall breathe. On wood trim and fascia, a satin acrylic sheds water and dirt better.

Color matters too. Deep, bright colors fade fastest in this sun, mostly on south and west walls. Earth tones and lighter colors hold longer. Elastomeric coatings are an option for stucco with many fine cracks.

Can I use the same paint inside and outside?

No, do not use the same paint inside and outside. Interior paint used outdoors breaks down fast, because it is not made for sun, heat and water. Exterior paint contains additives for weather and mildew and is not meant for indoor air. Some products are labeled for both, and those are fine where the label says so.

Does expensive paint last longer than cheap paint?

Generally, yes. More expensive paint has more and better pigment and resin, so it covers in fewer coats, washes better and holds color longer. By the national figures, a gallon costs $20 to $80, with interior paint at $20 to $60 and exterior paint at $30 to $80. Labor is 70% to 85% of a paint job, so cheap paint saves little and can cost an extra coat.

Is one paint brand really better than another?

Not by brand name alone. Every major brand sells several grades, from contractor grade to premium. The top line from one brand and the top line from another are closer to each other than the top and bottom lines of the same brand. Compare by product line, not by brand. We do not push one brand. Ask us what we would use on your job and why.

How many coats of paint do I need?

Two coats is the standard for a lasting, even finish. One coat can be enough when you repaint the same color over sound paint. Three coats, or primer plus two, may be needed for a big color change, for bright reds and yellows and for new or patched surfaces. Our quotes state the number of coats.

How do I cover dark paint with a light color?

To cover a dark wall with a light color, prime first. A high-hiding primer, sometimes tinted toward the new color, blocks the dark shade so two finish coats can do their job. Without primer you can end up putting on three or four coats of expensive paint and still see a shadow.

Why does the same color look different in different rooms, and what white will not look yellow?

The same color looks different because the light is different. A north room gets cool, bluish light. A west room gets warm afternoon sun, and San Bernardino afternoons are very bright. Bulbs, flooring and the trees or wall outside the window all tint what you see. Test a large sample on two walls and look at it morning, afternoon and night.

A white will not look yellow if it has a neutral or slightly cool base instead of a cream one. But warm bulbs, warm flooring and oil-based enamel that has aged will make any white look yellow. Compare white samples against your trim, your floor and a sheet of printer paper.

How do I pick an exterior color that matches my roof and brick?

Start with what will not change. The roof, any brick or stone, the driveway and the window frames are fixed, and the paint color has to work with them. Most local roofs are clay or concrete tile in red, brown or blended tones, or composition shingles in gray or brown. Pick a wall color that sits well next to the roof, then a trim color, then an accent for the front door.

Look at samples outside in full sun, since colors read lighter and more washed out in our light. If you are in an HOA, begin with its approved list.

How much paint do I need?

One gallon covers 300 to 400 square feet, by the published figures. HomeGuide puts an average room, with 800 square feet of wall and ceiling surface, at 2 gallons for one coat and 4 gallons for two. Rough or textured walls and bare stucco take more.

For exteriors, the same source lists 6 to 10 gallons for two coats on a 1,500 square foot home and 8 to 12 gallons for 1,800 square feet. On stucco, two coats of acrylic cover only 100 to 175 square feet per gallon.

Should the painter supply the paint or should I buy it?

In most cases, let the painter supply the paint. The painter knows how much is needed, picks the right product for each surface and stands behind the result. If you buy the paint yourself and it runs short, covers badly or fails, it is harder to sort out who is responsible. If you want a certain product or color, tell us and we will price the job with it.
